Overview
Baltimore Orioles and Orchard Orioles are closely related songbirds within the genus Icterus. While they share many behaviors and feeding habits, several key differences make identification easier.
Appearance
- Baltimore Oriole: Bright orange and black with bold contrast
- Orchard Oriole: Smaller; adult males are chestnut and black

Size
The Orchard Oriole is the smallest oriole species in North America, while the Baltimore Oriole is noticeably larger and more robust.

Habitat Preferences
Baltimore Orioles prefer open woodlands, shade trees, and suburban landscapes. Orchard Orioles favor denser vegetation, orchards, and riparian habitats.

Diet and Feeding
Both species eat fruit, jelly, nectar, and insects. Backyard birders often attract both species using the same food offerings.

Nesting Behavior
Both species weave hanging pouch nests, but Orchard Oriole nests are smaller and usually placed lower in trees.

Migration Timing
Baltimore Orioles arrive earlier in spring and depart later in fall. Orchard Orioles arrive later and are among the first songbirds to migrate south again.
