A BETTER WAY TO FEED YOUR BIRDS

JCS Wildlife Barn Owl Box

JCS Wildlife
From Our Basement to Your Backyard: The Story and Science Behind the Ultimate Barn Owl Box

Every business has a beginning, and for us at JCS Wildlife, it all started in our family basement. Years ago, my husband and our sons would spend their weekends downstairs surrounded by sawdust, tools, and a shared mission: to build the perfect sanctuary for one of nature’s most majestic pest-controllers.

The Barn Owl Box was the very first product we ever made as a company. Because of that, it holds a special place in our hearts. We love this box, and we absolutely love barn owls. Over the years, we’ve refined the design to make it an incredibly safe, sturdy, and effective habitat.

If you are looking to welcome a breeding pair of barn owls to your property, here is a look behind the scenes at how we build this flagship box and the science behind why it works so well.

Engineered for Natural Attraction and Safety

When you look at the front of the box, the first thing you’ll notice is the specialized elliptical entrance hole. This shape isn't just for looks—it is precision-scaled to perfectly match the physical proportions of a barn owl, welcoming them inside while making it difficult for larger birds of prey to invade the cavity.

But the real magic happens just inside the door. We’ve engineered an interior safety partition wall directly behind the entrance. This serves as a critical shield against predators. When a raccoon, opossum, or large hawk tries to reach inside, they physically cannot reach around this partition corner. This design creates a completely secure, hidden nesting well where the mother owl and her developing owlets can tuck away safely out of sight.

You’ll also notice precision-cut kerf grooves along the front panel. While they add a beautiful, handcrafted aesthetic to the exterior of the house, they also give young fledglings an extra bit of texturized grip to help them scale the wall and look out when they are getting ready to explore the world.

Built to Last for Decades

Because these habitats endure years of open exposure to harsh storms, heavy winds, and relentless sunlight, we refuse to cut corners on structural materials.
  • Thick 5/8-Inch Exterior Plywood: We use heavy-duty, 5/8-inch thick plywood held together with commercial exterior-grade weather glues, ensuring the framing remains completely rigid and sturdy.
  • Pre-Treated for Immediate Setup: We ship every single box to your door already treated with a premium coat of boiled linseed oil to preserve the natural wood grain against rot.
  • Simple Annual Maintenance: To keep the wood protected for decades, we recommend reapplying a fresh coat of linseed oil once a year. Alternatively, you can use any high-quality water-based exterior paint or water-based clear exterior sealant to match your property's look.

Everything You Need Right in the Box

We want to make your setup as successful and smooth as possible, which is why your Barn Owl Box arrives as a complete installation kit:
  1. Complimentary Nesting Shavings: Barn owls do not gather or carry their own nesting materials. To make the house immediately inviting to winter scouts, we include premium pine shavings right in the package. Simply sprinkle about a third to a half of the bag along the bottom floor to prep the nursery well.
  2. Heavy-Duty Steel French Cleat System: These boxes are substantial, and safety is paramount. We include a commercial-grade steel French cleat mounting system. One piece mounts flush to the back of the owl house, and the matching piece anchors securely to your tree trunk, barn wall, or high post. Simply slide the two interlocking steel tracks together for a rock-solid mount that will hold your owl house safely aloft for years to come without ever shifting.
